Whether you are hiking 14ers or skiing high-altitude resorts such as Telluride and Snowbird, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can afflict anyone heading higher than 6,000 feet. AMS often starts with a splitting headache, quickly followed by loss of appetite, sometimes vomiting, weakness, dizziness, fatigue, and difficulty sleeping–basically the same as having a really bad hangover. Symptoms can occur as early as two hours after arrival to altitude, or be delayed for up to 24 hours.

As this blog has attempted to show, the world is a wide and wonderful place to try stuff. And just when you learn about one locale that’s perfect for your outdoor obsession — be it hiking, backpacking, climbing, biking, skiing, paddleboarding, canyoneering, or just stepping off the beaten path — the list of places grows.
This, of course, is a decidedly good thing.

Havasu Falls pretty much achieves the impossible. It almost trumps the Grand Canyon — at least in terms of sheer, gob-smacking beauty. Granted, not much can match the vast grandeur of that wide canyon carved by the Colorado River. But where the Grand exceeds in inspiring immeasurable awe, Havasu Falls feels almost personal. And while far from secret — its iconic waterfalls have populated countless full-page magazine spreads and downloadable screensavers — the region still feels like it belongs to you.
